Bike: Kawasaki 1500cc Vulcan Classic

I always wanted to ride but never had the means to do so. I got the bug again when a girlfriend on my softball team rode. John, on the other hand, was not impressed I wanted to ride. He thought the bikes were dangerous and why would I want to do that anyway? For Christmas in 1994, he surprised me with a bike. I took the MSF course, on the high recommendation of my Uncle, the summer of 1995. Passed with flying colors and couldn’t wait to ride!! John fixed up the bike, but he wasn’t happy with how it ran and I really wasn’t comfortable on it. So, off we went to buy a new, used bike. I got a 250 cc Honda Nighthawk. I told him this would be a starter bike for a couple of years, just to warn him! That fall I joined Women on Wheels. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a group of women much less biker women! No worries!! It’s been the best group I have ever joined!!

In 1997 , John bought me a 1996 Yamaha 750cc Virago. I put 12,000 miles on her. My first big trip was to the WOW National Ride-In in Colorado in 1998. My Uncle went with me since everyone was nervous about me going. What a blast!!! I got a real taste of being out on the open road. I also went to the Ride-In in Alabama then over to Georgia to see some friends. I came home by myself unscathed and very proud! Somewhere between 1999 and 2000, I fell in love with the Kawasaki 1500cc Vulcan Classic. I talked about it for 2 years knowing it really wasn’t possible to buy one, but it was my dream bike. In May of 2002, John surprised me with the Vulcan. Literally. He got it in the garage when I was gone and covered it up with my old cover. I didn’t notice it for a day and a half. I was planning on going to the Ride-In in California and he wanted me to be on a little better bike. Lucky me!! California, so far, has been the best trip I ever made!!

Since 1994, I haven’t looked back. I enjoy riding so much it’s beyond description. I’m looking forward to many more wonderful trips and I’m encouraging my children to ride when they get older so they can carry on my legacy.
